The 12th World Environmental Education Congress (WEEC2024) officially commenced today under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Hamdan Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chairman of the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD). The congress, held at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC), will run until February 2nd and revolves around the theme “Connecting People, Creating Tomorrow.”
In a groundbreaking move for the first time in the Middle East, WEEC2024 brings together leaders, experts, educators, and advocates from 72 countries to address environmental sustainability through education. The congress serves as a platform for global collaboration in tackling climate emergency, biodiversity loss, and pollution through the lens of Environmental Education.
H.H. Sheikh Hamdan Bin Zayed Al Nahyan expressed the UAE’s commitment to advancing environmental education, knowledge-sharing, and innovation, highlighting the nation’s role as a leader in fostering environmental literacy and sustainability.
H.E Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri, Secretary-General at Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi, emphasized the importance of environmental education as a foundational step in achieving environmental goals. She highlighted WEEC2024 as a catalyst for engaging global stakeholders in discussions and actions toward a sustainable future.
H.H. Sheikha Shamma bint Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nahyan, President and CEO of UAE Independent Climate Change Accelerators (UICCA), underlined the event’s role in uniting efforts to cultivate environmental awareness and drive the transition to a resource-efficient green economy.
H.E. Dr Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak Al Shamsi, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, acknowledged the UAE’s commitment to environmental stewardship and emphasized the role of environmental education in addressing climate change challenges.
WEEC2024, dedicated to sustainability, implements measures to reduce its environmental impact. The Youth Environmental Education Conference (YEEC) within the congress focuses on engaging young minds, nurturing leadership skills, and inspiring action in the field of environmental education and sustainability.
