Global beauty company L’Oreal aims to use 100% recycled or bio-based plastic by 2030. The French cosmetics manufacturer, which owns brands like Garnier, Lancome, and Shu Uemura, plans to use recycled plastic in 50% of its product packaging by 2025. L’Oreal is also working on reducing plastic consumption by using smaller packaging and lighter plastic materials.
Alexandra Palt, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of L’Oreal, announced these plans during an online conference. The company has allocated 100 million euros for circular economy development and environmental restoration.
L’Oreal began its sustainability efforts years ago, with a sustainable development program launched in 2013. The company’s aim is to use 100% recycled or bio-based plastic by 2030.
L’Oreal’s Chairman Jean-Paul Agon explained that Earth is facing unprecedented challenges due to high pollution rates, necessitating accelerated efforts to preserve safe conditions for humanity. Investors prefer to invest in companies that contribute to environmental preservation in light of these risks.
L’Oreal also plans to improve energy efficiency and achieve 100% renewable energy use in all manufacturing, administration, and research facilities by 2025. By the end of 2020, the company aims to have over 80% reduction in carbon emissions, and by 2030, it aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions per final product by 50% compared to 2016 levels.
