SDG11 City Insights Report with Next Steps for Building Green and Sustainable Cities

The Global Council on SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), a coalition of UN experts under the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure and Digital Dubai, today revealed the City Insights Report on SDG 11.

This publication is a joint effort that provides an analysis of the current state of successful sustainable city models, characteristics of future models of resilient cities, and a showcase of new streams of urban solutions.

Furthermore, the report provides wide-ranging expert opinions, a review of cities’ performance against SDG 11 indicators, and high-level recommendations.

His Excellency Suhail bin Mohammed Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy and Infrastructure and Chairman of the Global Council on SDG11, His Excellency Younis Al Nasser, Assistant Director General of Digital Dubai and Vice Chairman of the Council, and His Excellency Abdulla Nasser Lootah, Director General of the Prime Minister’s Office at the Ministry of Cabinet Affairs, attended the report launch ceremony.

The Minister said: “As the world becomes more civilized, Goal 11 of the Sustainable Development Goals gains paramount importance and lies at the heart of the Sustainable Development Goals.

“In the UAE, we are successfully moving towards sustainable cities through a multi-pronged approach that includes using advanced technologies such as digital twins of cities for spatial planning, integrating artificial intelligence (AI) to achieve city sustainability and high standards of living, promoting sustainable and smart mobility solutions, building resilient infrastructure, reducing energy and water consumption, and finally achieving our goal of reaching net zero carbon by 2050.”

He added: “In line with the Council’s main mission of providing actionable insights, policy suggestions, developing technological solutions, and mobilizing resources to build sustainable cities and communities, we are pleased to present the SDG11 City Insights Report. It represents an effort led by the United Arab Emirates to highlight the true potential of disruptive technologies for cities that are at the heart of fundamental global transformations, and we hope that they will be a driver of change in cities toward achieving the goals of SDG1.”

His Excellency Younis Al Nasser said: “The United Arab Emirates’s strategic contribution to the SDG11 City Insights report is a testimony to our commitment to benefit from our urban achievements for the benefit of cities in the region and the world.

“Our complete focus was around providing insights that can help urban and city leaders measure their progress towards delivering  SDG 11 and sustainably transform their cities.

“Our contribution to the report clearly reflects the model of the role we play, not only in terms of innovation and economic growth but also in promoting sustainable urban development.

“We are fully aware that building a sustainable future for our cities is significant to the well-being of our citizens, the economy, and the environment, and we will remain committed to this goal. Also among our efforts, we hope to inspire other cities to give top priority to sustainable development and work to build a better future for all.”

The Global Councils for Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals were established during the sixth World Government Summit (WGS) to be a unique multidisciplinary and diverse network of decision-makers from governments, international organizations, academia, philanthropic organizations, and the private sector coming together to shape the way forward towards tough and effective implementation of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the national and global levels.
